Tripitaka master [三蔵] (; san-zō): An honorific title given to those who were well versed in the three divisions of the Buddhist canon, i.e., the sutras, the vinaya (rules of monastic discipline), and the abhidharma (commentaries on the sutras and vinaya). The honorific title “Tripitaka master” was also used in reference to eminent translators of Buddhist scriptures such as Kumārajīva.
