Ts’ung-i [従義] (1042–1091) (PY Congyi; Jūgi): A priest of the T’ien-t’ai school in China. He entered the priesthood at age eight and later studied the T’ien-t’ai teachings under Chi-chung. Ts’ung-i produced many works, including The Supplement to the Three Major Works on the Lotus Sutra. He asserted the supremacy of the T’ien-t’ai doctrine over the doctrines of the Zen (Ch’an), Flower Garland (Hua-yen), and Dharma Characteristics (Fa-hsiang) schools.
