ten major precepts [十重禁戒] ( ju-jūkinkai): The ten most important among the fifty-eight rules of discipline for Mahayana bodhisattvas set forth in the Brahmā Net Sutra. (The others are called the forty-eight minor precepts.) The ten major precepts are (1) not to kill, (2) not to steal, (3) not to engage in any sexual relations, (4) not to lie, (5) not to sell liquor, (6) not to speak ill of the past misdeeds of other Buddhists, (7) not to praise oneself or disparage others, (8) not to begrudge offerings or spare one’s efforts for the sake of Buddhism, (9) not to give way to anger, and (10) not to speak ill of the three treasures (the Buddha, his teachings, and the Buddhist Order).
