six monks, group of [六群比丘] ( rokugun-biku): Six monks of Shakyamuni Buddha’s Order in India. Buddhist texts on the rules of monastic discipline cite the improper conduct of this group of six monks as the reason for the Buddha’s establishment of many of the monastic precepts or prohibitions. Though their names differ among Buddhist scriptures, they are most often listed as Nanda, Upananda, Kālodāyin, Chanda, Ashvaka, and Punarvasu.
