specific transfer [別付嘱] ( betsu-fuzoku): Also, specific transmission. A transfer of the essence of the Lotus Sutra by Shakyamuni Buddha to Bodhisattva Superior Practices and the other Bodhisattvas of the Earth that takes place in the “Supernatural Powers” (twenty-first) chapter of the sutra. The specific transfer is so called because the essence of the sutra was transferred specifically to the Bodhisattvas of the Earth. It is contrasted with the general transfer, which takes place in the subsequent (twenty-second) chapter, “Entrustment.” In that chapter, the Lotus Sutra is transferred to all the assembled bodhisattvas.
