scorched seeds ［焦種］ ( shōshu): A reference to persons of the two vehicles. Mahayana sutras often describe persons of the two vehicles—voice-hearers and cause-awakened ones—as being incapable of attaining Buddhahood, likening them to scorched or rotten seeds that will never sprout.
