sixteen types of meditation [十六観] ( jūroku-kan): According to the Meditation on the Buddha Infinite Life Sutra, the sixteen practices of meditation leading to rebirth in the Land of Perfect Bliss, or the land of Amida Buddha. The first thirteen types of meditation involve concentrating one’s mind on the splendor of the Land of Perfect Bliss, the features of Amida Buddha, and the bodhisattvas in this pure land. The other three types of meditation are directed at the image of Amida Buddha. In the Pure Land school, the first thirteen types of meditation are regarded as “concentrated meditation.” In contrast, the remaining three can be practiced even with an unfocused mind and are therefore called “unconcentrated meditation.”
