sun, god of the ［日天］ ( Sūrya;  Nitten): A deification of the sun in Indian mythology, adopted in Buddhism as a protective god. The Sanskrit word sūrya means sun. Buddhist scriptures often mention the god of the sun in conjunction with the god of the moon.
