Sujātā [須闍多] (, Pali; Shujata): A girl who offered food to Shakyamuni before he entered meditation to attain enlightenment. Shakyamuni had engaged in ascetic practices in Uruvilvā for twelve years (six years according to another view) and, realizing that asceticism fails to lead to the true way, he abandoned it. He then bathed in the Nairanjanā River and, offered milk curds by Sujātā, ate them and recovered his strength. Thereafter he entered meditation under a pipal (bodhi) tree and attained enlightenment.
